Truly, it belongs there.
That’s how terrific this new sci-fi thriller is. My review of it is going to be one of my shortest ever as I want you to go see the movie with as few spoilers as possible. I went in without even having seen the trailer so I knew nothing about the plot, characters, and delicious twists in store. And I was gobsmacked!
(True, I have done a caricature of Sophie Thatcher in the lead role of Iris for you here, but exactly what is going on in the illustration is yours to discover in the movie!)
So…
Here are the basics of the film’s premise:
Iris and Josh head up north to a lake house for a weekend with friends. Iris (Sophie Thatcher) is nervous about meeting the pals of Josh (Jack Quaid), but he assures her all will be fine. Eli and Patrick (Harvey Guillen and Lukas Gage), and Kat and Sergey (Megan Suri and Rupert Friend) will take to her, he lovingly assures his girlfriend.
Once Iris and Josh arrive, everything feels a little…off. Even Josh is acting a bit strange. Why? As the surprises are revealed, you will be continually delighted by this wickedly clever, often chilling, and darkly humorous thrill ride.
COMPANION was written and directed by Drew Hancock (MY DEAD EX, SUBURGATORY) and the filmmaker expertly keeps us on edge and uncertain of what will happen next. The entire cast is terrific, especially the two leads. And after this film and HERETIC, I’m ready to be the president of the Sophie Thatcher Fan Club.
Go see COMPANION in the theater and enjoy it with a gasping, laughing audience. It’s one helluva time at the cinema. And it’s going to be on my Top 10 Films of 2025.
